Demand for deepwater drilling rigs will exceed supply through 2016, according to ODS-Petrodata's latest Deepwater Rig Market Report.
Although orders for 27 new rigs have been announced in the first half of 2008, and all but one will have the capability of working in water depths greater than 7,500 feet, demand will still exceed supply throughout the period. Even if an additional 28 rigs that Petrobras plans to use are built in the next few years, this will only reduce, but not eliminate, the expected shortfall in rig supply seen in 2016.
As a result, day rates are expected to stay close to today's levels in real terms, which will provide comfort to rig owners but this offers little relief to operators who are already suffering from higher costs in all areas of their operations.
The Deepwater Rig Market Report, published biannually, focuses on future worldwide demand to 2016 and day rates to mid-2012 for the deepwater rig market. The report also provides an overview of the short-term outlook for the deepwater rig market, and includes detailed analyses of the global supply-demand balance for rigs by water depth interval.
